1.1.4 Functions and Duties

Hindustan Organic Chemicals Limited (HOCL) operates under the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals as a public sector undertaking focused on manufacturing basic organic chemicals. Its primary functions include producing Phenol, Acetone, and Hydrogen Peroxide at its Kochi unit to support self-reliance and reduce import dependence.

Key Duties
HOCL supplies essential chemicals for downstream industries like pharmaceuticals, dyes, resins, rubber, paints, pesticides, and textiles.

Operational Role
Established in 1960, HOCL ensures indigenous production of vital intermediates, with its Kochi facility (commissioned 1987) holding capacities of 40,000 TPA Phenol, 24,640 TPA Acetone, and 5,225 TPA Hydrogen Peroxide.

The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, oversees HOCL to promote indigenous chemical production for downstream industries like pharmaceuticals and dyes.
